Martin Cate, formerly of Forbidden Island in Alameda (where I rang in 2009), will open Smuggler’s Cove, his new venture, on December 8. The tiki- and nautically-decorated bar, which is located at 650 Gough (at McAllister) in San Francisco, is a tribute to rum-based cocktails throughout history, and features their own house labels of rum, beer and wine, all made locally. A group of us got a sneak preview on Thursday night, which was lucky, because once the doors are open, the place is going to be packed. They have a rock star line-up of bartenders, nearly 80 cocktails to taste through, and even a special rum tasting club. San Francisco cocktail enthusiasts, get ready, ’cause it’s ON.
